What if Joseph had decided that no one would ever know? What if, after years of being rejected by his brothers, sold as a slave, and living far from home, he had finally given in to temptation, thinking that he deserved that kind of attention? After all, he was young, alone, and far away from everyone who had ever known him. He could have convinced himself that his circumstances justified his decision and that one moment of weakness would not really matter.
Well, we can imagine what might have happened. Joseph would almost certainly have remained in a position of comfort and influence within Potiphar’s household for a while, but he would have carried the kind of secret that normally does not stay hidden for very long. Sooner or later, someone would probably have begun to notice that something was not quite right between Joseph and the wife of their master.
But even more importantly, Joseph would have lost something far more valuable than his position or his reputation. He would have damaged his relationship with God and compromised the character that God was patiently shaping in him through every hardship. Before God, his integrity was preparing him for responsibilities he could not yet imagine.
If Joseph had chosen sin instead of obedience, would Pharaoh have ever trusted him? Would God have used him to preserve Egypt and save Jacob’s family during the famine? The truth is that Joseph would most likely never have met Pharaoh personally or risen above the position of a slave. Humanly speaking, the entire story of Joseph in Egypt could have taken a very different direction.
Joseph chose to be different…
When temptation stood before him, he looked beyond the immediate moment and remembered that God had been with him. His answer was not simply, “I cannot do this to Potiphar,” but, “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against my God?” (Genesis 39:9). Joseph understood that even when no human eyes were watching, God’s eyes were.
Ironically, doing the right thing did not immediately make his life easier. Instead of receiving a reward for his honesty and faithfulness to the trust his master had placed in him, Joseph was falsely accused and humiliated before all the servants in the house, and finally thrown into prison.
From a human point of view, obedience to God and integrity toward his master seemed to cost him everything. Yet behind those prison walls, God was still writing the next chapter of Joseph’s life. What looked like a setback was actually another step in God’s perfect plan.
One decision to remain faithful changed far more than Joseph could ever have imagined.
God used Joseph’s integrity to prepare him for a very important leadership role. Through years of waiting and trusting, the Lord placed him exactly where He wanted him, second only to Pharaoh. At thirty years old, Joseph became so powerful and respected that the years of humiliation were finally behind him. For the next eighty years of his life, God used him to bless an entire nation. Joseph became the instrument God used to preserve countless lives, including the very brothers who had broken his heart…
Joseph’s life reminds us that one act of obedience can become part of a much bigger story than we could ever imagine. Our circumstances may tempt us to take the easier path, but God’s grace gives us the strength to remain faithful, trusting that His plans are always better than our own.
